Tipping can feel confusing when it comes to Massage Therapy.

Unlike industries such as hair, nails, esthetics, or tattooing — where tipping is often expected — massage therapy tends to fall somewhere in the middle.

Some clients view massage therapy as part of healthcare, similar to chiropractic or physiotherapy, while others see it as part of the wellness and spa industry.

Because of that, many clients genuinely are not sure:
“Am I supposed to tip my massage therapist?”

The simple answer is this:

Tips Are Never Expected

At TLC Mobile Massage, tipping is never expected or required.

Whether you leave a gratuity or not, you will always receive the same level of care, professionalism, and attention during your treatment.

Your comfort, health, and experience matter far more than whether or not you are able to tip.

Massage therapy is already an investment in your health and wellness, and we fully understand that everyone’s financial situation looks different, especially in today’s economy.

However, Tips Are Always Appreciated

While gratuities are never expected, they are always genuinely appreciated.

Like many small business owners and massage therapists, a large portion of what we earn goes directly back into:

  • treatment supplies
  • laundry
  • oils and linens
  • travel costs for mobile appointments
  • continuing education
  • clinic expenses
  • business overhead

Sometimes tips become the extra bit that helps after all the bills are paid.

So… What Is the “Normal” Tip?

Truthfully, there is no universal rule when it comes to massage therapy tipping etiquette in Canada.

In more clinical settings, many clients choose not to tip at all because massage therapy is viewed as healthcare.

In spa environments, tipping is much more common, especially for specialty treatments and relaxation-focused services.

For clients who do choose to tip, the most common range tends to be:

  • 10% for good service
  • 15–20% for exceptional service or spa-style treatments (Hot Stone, Raindrop)

However, many clients choose smaller flat amounts instead, particularly for shorter therapeutic appointments.

For example:

  • A quick 30-minute treatment may receive a smaller gratuity simply as a thank you
  • A 60–90 minute relaxation or therapeutic massage may fall into a more standard tipping range
  • Specialty treatments such as hot stone massage, raindrop therapy, or spa-style sessions sometimes receive higher gratuities because of the additional setup, products, and treatment style involved
  • Mobile massage appointments may also be tipped differently because of travel time, setup, and transportation of equipment

At the end of the day, gratuities should never create stress or pressure.

Tipping Doesn’t Always Mean Money

One of the beautiful things about working closely with clients is learning that appreciation comes in many different forms.

Over the years, tips have come in ways far beyond cash:

  • homemade cookies
  • farm-fresh eggs
  • wild meat
  • handwritten cards
  • referrals to family and friends
  • even being fed supper while working mobile appointments all day

Those gestures are remembered just as much as monetary tips.

Kindness and appreciation do not always have a dollar amount attached to them.

Communication & Appreciation Matter Most

One of the most meaningful things a client can do is communicate openly and honestly.

Letting your massage therapist know:

  • when something helped
  • when pressure felt perfect
  • when your pain improved
  • or when you simply enjoyed your experience

…goes a very long way.

Positive reviews, referrals, repeat bookings, and continued support of local businesses are all incredibly valuable ways clients support massage therapists as well.

The Bottom Line

If you choose to tip your massage therapist, it will always be appreciated.

If you cannot tip, that is completely okay too.

Massage therapy should never feel uncomfortable or financially stressful because of gratuity expectations.

Whether your appreciation comes through a cash tip, kind words, referrals, homemade baking, or continued support, it is all valued more than you probably realize.

At TLC Mobile Massage, the goal will always remain the same:
to provide a welcoming, professional, and exceptional experience for every client who walks through the door.
